A Tellico Plains-area woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault Saturday even though she was the one who was shot.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Detective Doug Mills said it was around 7:30 p.m. when Candace Nicole Poole and George Shaffer got into an argument in a house on Bell Town Road over gun registration laws in Tennessee. Poole allegedly pulled a .45-caliber gun and fired at Shaffer twice.

Mills said one of these shots went through the rear passenger side window of Shaffer’s truck and struck the driver’s door.

Shaffer, who told Mills he was scared for his life, fired back at Poole, hitting her in the hand and arm.

Poole, 37, did receive medical attention, but her wounds were not considered life threatening.
