The official grand opening celebrating the new splash pad at Engleman Park in Sweetwater is set for 11 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The splash pad had a “soft” opening on Aug. 24, however, the upcoming event is the official celebration for the project’s completion. The new splash pad is part of a larger project that added a new pavilion, walkways and parking to the tree-studded park.
Engleman Park stays busy with reunions much of the year and it has undergone several major upgrades the past few years thanks in part to grants the city has received.
But there is little question the large splash pad is stealing the show, especially in the eyes of the children in the area.
“The kids are going to have a ball,” Sweetwater Parks and Recreation Commissioner Lamar Hughes said when he gave The Advocate & Democrat a tour of the park’s new additions. “All this is for the families and the children.”
In 2011, a new pavilion and playground equipment was added at the park, which also boasts an arboretum, showcasing numerous types of trees native to the area.
The weather should be perfect for enjoying the splash pad’s grand opening. The National Weather Service says it will be sunny and 91 degrees on Saturday.
