A former Sequoyah High School student was killed and two more injured in a single-vehicle accident on County Road 580 near Athens late Saturday evening.
Cynthia Villarreal, 20, of Etowah, was driving a 2016 Dodge Charger above the posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour in the northbound lane of County Road 580 just before midnight Saturday.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol's preliminary report, Villarreal said she swerved to miss an animal, which caused the car to go down an embankment to the right, where it struck a tree. The vehicle then spun around, causing one passenger, Raul Cabrera, age 20, of Athens and a former Sequoyah High student, to be ejected from the vehicle. Cabrera, who was not wearing a safety belt, was pronounced dead.
Both Villarreal and the other passenger were injured in the incident.
