Tellico Plains man killed in early morning wreck

Duane Gabriel “Gabe” Dalton was killed in the wreck on Aug. 15.

A Tellico Plains man was killed in an early morning wreck on Aug. 15.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brian Millsaps said the wreck happened around 5:30 a.m. on New Highway 68 at the Eleazer Road intersection.

Millsaps said Duane Gabriel “Gabe” Dalton, 32, was driving a Dodge Dakota when he pulled onto the highway in the path of a delivery-style freight truck and was hit. According to the officer, the driver of the truck was not hurt but he will have his blood tested as just part of standard procedure.

“I’ll be surprised if anything comes back positive,” Millsaps said.

“It appears to have just been an unfortunate accident.”

Millsaps said the freight truck was driving toward Tellico Plains when the accident occurred and the darkness of the early morning may have contributed to the accident.

Dalton was not wearing a seat belt, but Millsaps admitted wearing one probably would not have made a difference in this accident.
