Candidates for the Sweetwater City Commission and Sweetwater Board of Education election on June 13 have just two more weeks to qualify.

Several potential candidates have picked up petitions, and a few have turned them back in with the necessary voter signatures to qualify to run. The qualifying deadline is noon on March 21 and the last day for citizens to register to vote is May 14.

Three City Commission seats currently held by Billy “Buster” West, Sam Moser and Edward Lee are on the ballot. All the incumbent commissioners have turned back in qualifying petitions to seek re-election.

In addition, Richard Bettis and Travis Paul have also turned back in qualifying petitions to run for City Commission. About a half dozen other people have picked up petitions for City Commission but as of noon Monday, had not turned them back in with the necessary signatures to qualify.

The seats of Kenzie Lovingood, Patrick Gaines and Dr. John Fox are up for re-election on the School Board. Only the three incumbents have picked up school board petitions and only Lovingood had turned one back in as of noon Monday.

Early voting for the June election will run May 24 to June 8.
