Organizers are once again paying tribute to a late Tellico Plains High School athletics supporter through an event that raises money for what he loved the most.
The ninth annual Tim Kelley Memorial 5K will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 9 a.m. The five-kilometer (3.1 mile) race is a two-lap course that will start at the Tellico Plains High School Alumni Center and continue into the Cherokee Subdivision.
“This race provides a way for Tim to continue to give back to the school,” said Organizer Barry Carroll. “Tim was always giving of his time and his efforts to the community. We’re happy to be able to use his name to promote the event and remember his legacy.”
The Tim Kelley Memorial 5K was originally created to raise money for the Tellico Plains High School Alumni Center, a state-of-the-art weight room for current and future Bears and Lady Bears to train for their sport.
The Alumni Center also showcases a banquet room where community events and school banquets can be held.
Since the Alumni Center was completed, proceeds from the Tim Kelley Memorial 5K now go to support the track and cross country programs at the high school. In recent years, funds from the race have helped buy new uniforms, pay for Piper Carter’s trip to the state track meet last year for triple jump and fund the cross country teams’ trip to the state meet this season. Organizers hope the proceeds from this year’s race can contribute to purchasing throwing pits for discus and shot put.
There are different age group categories for the race: 1-12, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-64 and 65 and older. Each of the age groups are split between men and women. The top three men and women finishers in all categories will receive a medal.
The cost to participate in the 5K is $25. T-shirts are guaranteed to all runners who register by April 10. Participants can also register on the morning of the race. The entry fee is non-refundable.
Registration will be from 7:45-8:45 a.m. at the Tellico Plains High School Alumni Center the day of the race. All contestants are encouraged to arrive in that time frame.
A free kids run will follow the 5K and will consist of one lap around the TPHS football field.
Entry forms can also be picked up at Tellico Plains High School or Volunteer Federal in Tellico Plains. Forms can also be downloaded from the official event website at www.timkelley5k.weebly.com
