A Sweetwater man drowned at Bald River Falls on the Fourth of July after going under the water and never resurfacing.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Dakota Rinehart said he went to Bald River Falls just before 6:30 p.m. on July 4 and talked with Melissa Harrell, who said Mark Beasley, 49, was not in good health and was walking down to the water when he slipped and rolled two times. Harrell said Beasley managed to get back up and that he was all right so he went into the water.

Rinehart said he then talked to Beasley’s daughter, who said she had last seen her father under the waterfall swimming about an hour before. Rinehart said Beasley’s shoes and other belongings were still in the spot he had left them.

A search was held and Chief Deputy Chris White said it was 12:21 a.m. when Beasley’s body was found under a submerged log at the base of the falls.
