Two inmates were sent to Starr Regional Hospital in Etowah after being attacked in a Monroe County jail cell.
With the expected opening of the Monroe County Justice Center still about four months away, a crowded cell in the 60-year-old current jail led to another fight around 11 a.m. on May 6.
Sgt. Kaleb Skinner said he went to cell one due to someone kicking the door and found inmate Jason Taylor lying on the floor at the door, covered in blood. Skinner said Taylor was evaluated then taken to the hospital for treatment.
Skinner said before this was even done, another inmate, identified as Matthew Thomas Sparks, was assaulted and left unconscious on the floor. He too was taken to Starr Regional in Etowah.
Skinner said he then had an opportunity to look at video footage and saw Taylor and Sparks sitting on mats on the floor when inmate Christopher Taylor Morgan walked by them, pointed at them then pointed at the door as if telling them to exit the cell.
The video then showed Morgan striking Taylor before Taylor managed to flip him over and begin getting the upper hand. But another inmate, Billy Jake Mason, stepped in and helped Morgan get the better of Taylor.
Skinner said Mason then began attacking Sparks with Morgan joining in and stomping Sparks’ head.
Both Mason, 29, Ball Play Road, Madisonville, and Morgan 28, Count Road 350, Athens, were charged with aggravated assault.
