A year after a Monroe County inmate escaped from jail, he was sentenced to six years on an escape charge.
Ricky Dale Dotson II, 30, Sunnyside Road, Sweetwater, was in Monroe County Criminal Court this past week to finally plea to the charge. He has spent the past year in jail after the escape.
After he escape from incarceration last year, Dotson was found in an Athens motel the next day.
Detective Jason Filyaw said Dotson had requested to be taken to the bathroom just before 6 p.m. the night of this escape and as the jailer was escorting him from his cell, Dotson took off running, climbed a barbed wire fence and ran toward the railroad tracks.
Dotson was located in a Super 8 Motel on Decatur Pike in Athens. Dotson was captured without incident and transported to the Monroe County Jail. Dotson, was in jail on an aggravated burglary charge before his escape.
During the escape, a corrections officer immediately attempted to grab the inmate’s feet as Dotson crossed the razor wire and the officer called for backup. Correction officers gave chase and additional personnel were called to assist.
While Dotson will receive credit for the year he has served, he is labeled a career criminal and will have to serve 60 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for release.
