A Madisonville man was arrested in Sweetwater on May 19 after he reportedly told a man he was going to take an item from a store without paying for it.

The alleged shoplifter didn’t know he was talking to an employee of the store.

Sweetwater Police Officer James Willett said he went to 68 Wholesale and talked to Lesley Mason Jr., who said he was approached by a man he knew as Cecil Travis Newman, who said he was going to take an item without paying for it and then stuck the item down the back of his shorts.

Mason told Willett that Newman began to walk toward the front of the store, not realizing Mason worked at the store. Mason said he then told another employee who stopped Newman at the door.

Willett said the item was a Milwaukee TICK, an equipment tracker valued at $75.

Newman, 41, Hiwassee Road, was charged with shoplifting.
