A Madisonville man was arrested on Aug. 6 after he allegedly shoplifted, then tried to get in a car with a woman in the parking lot.
Madisonville Police Officer Adam Russell said it was just after 7 p.m. when he went to Walmart on a report of a suspected shoplifter fleeing the store and trying to get into a parked car.
As he was getting close to the store, Russell spotted a man matching the shoplifter’s description walking near Bert’s Restaurant. Russell said he stopped and got out of his patrol car and the man surrendered without incident.
Russell identified the man as Travis Garren. A woman told Officer Thomas Spradlin that Garren had came up to her parked car and tried to get in, but was unable to open the door, so he took off on foot.
According to officers, the woman was extremely shaken up by the alleged incident.
Russell said the items allegedly stolen from the store were found and a check with the 911 Center showed Garren had active warrants for his arrest on probation violations.
Garren, 41, Highway 411, Madisonville, was charged with carjacking and shoplifting under $1,000.
