We need your help, readers.
The feds have not only placed tariffs on aluminum, steel and Chinese products, but also are targeting newspapers with a 33.3 percent tariff on newsprint imported from Canada, where most American newspapers get the paper they’re printed on.
This tariff will have devastating consequences for many newspapers, and we need your help to try and end this foolishness, which is the result of a petition filed by one U.S. newsprint manufacturer looking out for its own self-interests.
The lowdown on the whole issue can be found here: www.newsmediaalliance.org/news-and-insights/.
The paper for the newspaper you are holding in your hands is the second-highest expense at this and every other newspaper, behind personnel costs. The tariff threatens the viability of all newspapers. At The Advocate & Democrat, we estimate it would wipe out nearly 25 percent of our operating profit in one fell swoop.
Needless to say, that would be devastating.
Newspapers are a lifeblood of any community. Nobody else has the wherewithal to report high school sports like we do, let alone local government activities and chicken-dinner items you see every day in your local paper.
This tariff also will hurt you, because it will force us to put all of our expenses under a microscope along with circulation pricing. It’s no secret that newspapers have been hurt by the Internet, social media and other factors that have fragmented the media landscape, and this promises to add yet another challenge. This is an unnecessary and unsustainable blow to us and our industry.
We urge you to call our congressman and two U.S. senators at 202-224-3121. The Capitol Switchboard will forward your call to U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann and Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker.
We urge you to act now.
