Last Thursday Nelson went to see a hand specialist named Dr. Calhoun at Knoxville Orthopedics. Nelson has a fractured scaphoid in his wrist and a cyst has grown over the bone where it has tried to heal itself.

The doctor is going to have to remove the cyst from the bone, take bone from Nelson's hip and put the hip bone between the pieces and then put a screw in to hold them together. The surgery is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 21.

Nelson is very scared but Dr. Calhoun took his time and answered all his questions.

The doctor was running two hours behind and we were there for three hours. That is a long time to wait.

Every time I go to the doctor there are always people complaining about the wait. Now, I don't like to wait just like everybody else but I want to know that doctor is taking enough time to check everything he needs to check.

A few weeks ago, when Nelson went to see Dr. Gettinger, he was running behind. We were there for a couple of hours but when he came in our room, he talked to Nelson and took his time with him and you wouldn't have thought he was behind at all.

When we were starting to leave Nelson remembered his hand and asked Dr. Gettinger to look at it. He could have looked at it and said it was just sprained again. Why not? We already told him one doctor said it was sprained. But, he didn't.

He took his time and got an X-ray, even though I know he had other people waiting and it was already after 5 p.m.

I have heard some of the people say doctors' offices schedule their appointments too close together. That might actually be true but when you're a doctor you need to see as many people as you can, even if it means some have to wait a little longer.

It's not like they can say, "I am going to have 20 sick people today." They have no idea how many people are going to call in and say they need to be seen.

If it were you calling sick, wouldn't you want the doctor to try and work you in? I know I would and I want him to take his time and check everything so that I can get well.

So, thank you Dr. Gettinger for taking the time to listen to us and for checking Nelson out thoroughly.
