Kenneth M. Sherman of Tellico Plains, died on Sunday, June 28, following a sudden illness. He was born in Milwaukee, Wis. on June 23, 1939. Ken moved to Tellico Plains in 1994 from Wisconsin and worked for the Monroe County Sheriff Department for 14 years. He started his law enforcement career with the Village of Butler Police Department after his discharge from the Navy and joined the City of Oconomowoc Police Department in the early 70s, where he attained the rank of chief of police. He was also the chief of police of the Village of Lac La Belle and served as a special warden, part-time, for the Department of Natural Resources for the State of Wisconsin for 13 years where he also taught hunter and boating safety.

After retiring in 1994, he moved with his wife to Tellico Plains, where he returned to law enforcement with the Monroe County Sheriff Department and became the supervisor and coordinator of court security for Monroe County. He was also a member of the Rafter Volunteer Fire Department serving as treasurer for several years and worked with the Monroe County Red Cross as an EMA coordinator.

Ken was a member of the BPOE for many years serving as president of Watertown, Wisconsin Elks Lodge in 1986 and as state vice president of the Southeast District, where he served as chairman of the State Major Project Committee and as such was instrumental in the construction of a Respite Center for Cerebral Palsied Children at Camp Waubeck at the Wisconsin Dells in association with the Easter Seal Society. He was also affiliated with the Athens Elks Lodge and was a member of the Tellico Plains American Legion. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for many years attaining the Order of the Arrow and Eagle Scout.

Ken was a Vietnam era veteran, serving in the United States Navy as an aviation radio technician. He enjoyed camping, gun collecting, was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and most of all, those who knew him well, can attest to how much he enjoyed storytelling and people in general.

He was 70.

Survivors include: wife of 43 years-Patricia;

Sons and daughters-in-law-Christopher and Tina Sherman; and Ryan and Andrea Sherman;

Granddaughter-Mackenzie;

Grandson-Wyatt Kenneth, expected in September;

Step-grandson-Brandon and his mother, Julia;

Sister-Katherine;

Brother-in-law-Tom Pyzyk;

Nephew-Timothy and wife Mollie;

Two great-nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., July 11, at Center Presbyterian Church, 6265 Hwy. 360, Tellico Plains, where Ken was a member and an elder. His ashes will be interred in the Living Waters Cemetery at the church at a later date. Friends and family are invited to stay for fellowship and lunch after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to Center Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Tellico Plains.
