(Last modified: 2009-06-24 09:06:02) The recent Sweetwater election is officially in the record books and Sunday beer sales are legal in Sweetwater and unincorporated parts of Monroe County.
The Monroe County Election Commission certified the election Monday and Monroe County Election Administrator James Brown said everything went smoothly. "We've had some calls about the Sunday beer sales," Brown said, "and this certification means they can happen." The Sunday beer sales came about after Sweetwater residents passed the restaurant referendum, which allows for the sell of liquor by the drink in restaurants. By state law, that means beer can now be sold on Sundays in businesses that have beer licenses. Madisonville, Tellico Plains and Vonore are still prohibited from selling beer on Sunday. The Sweetwater election also saw Doyle Lowe elected mayor and Julian Walton and incumbent Billy Wayne Stockton and elected to the City Commission. Commissioner James Matoy was not re-elected. Tellico Plains and Vonore will both have elections in September. michael.thomason@advocateanddemocrat. com | 442-4575 Copyright © 2009, The Advocate and Democrat |
