scoreboard in the home half of the fifth inning to raise their margin to 11-1 and end the game under the mercy rule. Sequoyah was held to just two hits in the contest, singles by Brett Hawkins and freshman Randall Coley. Those two were the only Chiefs to reach base safely. Freshman DeAndre Allen got the start on the mound for the Chiefs and Adam Bushey threw the final frame for Sequoyah. Meigs County scored in each of the five innings played as they collected sixteen hits. Players with multiple hits for the Tigers included Jake Rowland with three singles, Howie Meadows with a double and a home run, Tyler Moore with a double and a single and Dillon McKinney and Josh Nijwager got two singles apiece. Brandon McKinney doubled for Meigs County and Andrew Howard had a single. Dakota McGinnis got the start for Meigs County and threw four innings. McGinnis allowed one run on two hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Nijwager closed the contest and allowed one hit while striking out three. After Sequoyah went down in order in the first, Meigs County used three singles and two walks to take a 3-0 lead. The Chiefs got on the board in the top of the second. Hawkins led off with a single then stole second base. Coley moved Hawkins to third with a ground out and Gary Cagle got the RBI with a ground ball to second base. Rowland singled and scored on a Meadows double to raise the Tigers advantage to 4-1 after three. McGinnis retired the Chiefs three up and three down in both the third and fourth innings. Meigs County added a single run in the third as Nijwager scored ahead of a Brandon McKinney double. The Tigers got the merry-go-round going in the fourth with a five run rally capped by a two-run home run by Meadows. Coley led off the fifth inning for Sequoyah with a single up the middle then promptly stole second base. Tiger relief pitcher Nijwager ended that threat by striking out the next three Chiefs. The contest and Sequoyah’s season ended when Meigs County added one run in the fifth as Meadows walked and later scored on Dillon McKinney’s RBI single. Copyright © 2008, The Advocate and Democrat |
