Just like in Friday’s semifinal game, the Lady Bears got off to a good start on Saturday in the district title game and cruised to a 53-24 win over Lookout Valley to claim their second straight district crown.
Samantha Russell opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and a jumper and Yearwood added a layup to open up a 10-0 lead. Russell added another trey and a layup, Tess Pearson added a layup, and Kori Hamilton sank a 3-pointer as the Lady Bears went up 20-0. The only points for Lookout Valley in the first quarter came on an Alex Spence 3-pointer with seconds remaining in the frame.
Russell sank two more treys in the second quarter and Yearwood added three jumpers as the Lady Bears continued to build on the lead. Princess Simmons got two layups and Rainey Barber got two jumpers for Lookout Valley, but the Lady Jackets still trailed 33-12 at halftime after a dominant first half by Tellico Plains.
Neither team scored much in the third quarter, and they remained somewhat even. Barber made a layup and Jalisa Sanders made a 3-pointer for Lookout Valley while Pearson scored for Tellico Plains. A Yearwood 3-pointer with moments remaining in the third quarter lifted the Lady Bears to a 40-20 advantage with one quarter remaining in the title bout.
Yearwood opened the fourth quarter with a jumper and she and Russell added two free throws apiece. Jaden Hollinghead poured in a 3-pointer and Maggie Hooper ended the game with a 3-point play to give the Lady Bears the championship.
The Lady Bears will host the first round of region action next weekend as the No. 1 seed from the District 4-A. Lookout Valley will advance to region as the No. 2 seed.
Russell led Tellico Plains with 21 while Yearwood added 17. Barber had 11 for Lookout Valley.
