Variety is the spice of life, and for local football fans, that spice will be found at King Berrong Stadium in Sweetwater one week before the high school football season officially begins.
Sweetwater High School will host the Sweetwater Valley Collision High School Football Jamboree on Friday, Aug. 16, featuring eight teams, three halftime events and an appropriate kickoff for the 2019 regular season.
Tellico Plains will begin the evening with a first quarter matchup against Loudon, followed by Meigs County versus Lenoir City for the second quarter. In the third, Sequoyah takes on Polk County and host Sweetwater finishes off the action with a bout with McMinn Central in the fourth quarter.
The jamboree begins at 7 p.m.
Fans might not want to leave their seats during halftime, though, as three special events will be held then: a punt, pass and kick competition, a 40-yard dash for skill players and a 40-yard dash for linemen.
There will be no little league action at the jamboree this year, as local middle school teams participated in their own jamboree, hosted by Tellico Plains Junior High School, on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Each participating school will pre-sell tickets for $5, with the proceeds going directly to that school. Tickets bought at the gate on the night of the jamboree will be $7, and the proceeds from that will be divided among the participating schools.
It is recommended that attendees arrive early in order to keep lines down, and that they be patient as they attempt to enter the stadium. There will be three entrances available for the jamboree: one at the school’s main gate, one at the breezeway by the school’s gym and one between the Sweetwater Junior High School/Sweetwater High School parking lot.
The lot at the Teacher Center near the high school will also be available for parking.
