The season couldn’t have started better for the Tellico Plains basketball teams.
Both the Bears and Lady Bears kicked off the 2019-2020 season with 2-0 records, as Tellico’s boys and girls teams notched wins against Oliver Springs and Wartburg Central in Hall of Fame games on Tuesday, Nov. 19 and Thursday, Nov. 21.
Kori Hamilton led the Lady Bears with 16 points in their 41-37 win over Oliver Springs, followed by Joell Stinnett with nine.
In the Bears’ 52-33 victory against the Bobcats, Evan Harris had a team-high 23 points, while Major Carter and Jace Lynn tied with eight points each.
“Not only do I expect them to play hard and give 110%, I want them to act right and be respectful as a team,” Tellico Plains head boys basketball coach David Tucker said before the season began. “We have players that I need to play key roles and I’ll ask a lot of these kids. We will play a lot of man to man this year and that takes work.
“We will shoot the three and drive inside; it’s coming. I’ve got some big boys inside and ball handlers outside.”
On Thursday against Wartburg, Chloe Ratledge was the Lady Bears’ leading scorer with 16 points in their 51-43 win, followed by Maggie Hooper and Hamilton with 10 each.
For the Bears, Harris once again led the team in scoring, this time with 20 points. Kobe Walker had 15 in Tellico’s 58-56 victory.
“I need our leaders to play under control and lead their team and they can do it,” Tucker said. “I need some playmakers, every team needs a playmaker. I can guarantee that, if we do lose, it won’t be because of lack of effort. We will give it our all and lay it all on the line.
“It’s going to be a great, exciting year.”
