Haley McGowen’s contributions to Tellico Plains softball this past season didn’t go unnoticed.
The former Lady Bears senior has been named to the 2019 Tennessee Sports Writers Association Class A All-State softball team, rewarding McGowen for a season that saw her serve as one of Tellico’s key weapons.
McGowen was threat offensively all year, particularly during Tellico’s season-ending loss to Unaka in the Class A sectional game. She went 4-for-5 and blasted two homers.
McGowen also provided leadership for the Lady Bears as part of a strong senior class that also featured Ireland Whitmire, Kelsie Jones and MacKenzie Armstrong.
Tellico Plains notched a 16-15 overall record and finished as the runner-up for both the District 4-A and Region 2-A titles. The loss to Unaka in sectionals left the Lady Bears just one game away from advancing to the state tournament.
“It’s been a great group this year,” Tellico head coach Sharon McKinnon said in May. “It’s been a fun season. We just wanted to punch that ticket.”
Tellico will have to adequately replace McGowen and her senior peers this season if the Lady Bears hope to improve in a Monroe County softball scene that also features talent-filled programs in Sweetwater and Sequoyah.
“We’re going to rebuild and come out next season,” McKinnon said.
