Planners discuss priorities for new year

The Sweetwater Regional Planning Commission held its shortest meeting in months Monday.
But in the 10-minute meeting, planners approved a final plat for Randy McCool’s four-lot housing development located off Lee’s Chapel Road.

State Planner Laura Smith said she is working on the commission’s Annual Report and Program Design.
The report looks back at a busy 12 months for planners while the Program Design is a list of priorities planners want to tackle in the upcoming 12 months.

One issue planners will likely tackle is landscaping and buffering requirements.
Code Enforcement and Planning Officer Beth Collins said the current requirements are vague and others agreed with her.
“This lacks a lot of detail in comparison to Athens,” Planning Commission Chairman Jack Cox said, holding the current regulations.

He said planners might consider some type of compromise between the current page and half requirements and Athens’ 20-page list of requirements for planting trees and shrubs.
Planners meet at 6 p.m. at City Hall on the third Monday of the month.
