An Athens man accused
of stabbing Rex Curry, 45, of Vonore to death at Notchey Creek Campground last
month had his case bound over to a grand jury Tuesday. Investigators said
Harvey Brian Cochran, 37, was involved in a domestic dispute with his
girlfriend at the campground during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. According to Monroe
County Sheriff’s Office detectives, Curry came over to Cochran’s campground to
diffuse the situation but Cochran stabbed him in the heart. “It was one of the
bloodiest scenes I ever dealt with,” veteran Detective Mike Morgan said. Investigators do not
believe the two men knew each other previously. Detective Travis Jones
said Cochran’s attorney during a preliminary hearing before Sessions Court
Judge Reed Dixon argued for the case to be bound over to a grand jury on a
second-degree murder charge but the judge bound it over on a first-degree
charge. Jones said it will then
be up to a grand jury on whether or not to indict Cochran. Jones said he expects
the grand jury to hear the case in July. tommy.millsaps@advocateanddemocrat.com | 337-7101
