• On June 17, Sweetwater Police Detective Bill Illingworth charged Johnathan Richard Stein, 19, Morris Street, Sweetwater, with forgery. Illingworth met with Stein, who was in jail on a violation of probation charge. Illingworth’s warrants said Stein admitted to stealing checks from his sister and parent’s checkbooks. Stein said he wrote checks at a grocery store and several banks.
• On June 17, Monroe Sheriff’s Officer B.J. Johnson charged Romeo Beltran, 28, Lexington, Ky., with simple possession of marijuana after a traffic stop on Interstate 75. The officer stopped Beltran’s SUV for following too closely. Johnson allegedly found marijuana in a drinking cup in the vehicle. Johnson also cited Beltran for driving without a license.
• On June 16, Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Samuel Holcomb charged Gilford Sturgill, 41, Tellico Trails, Sweetwater, with DUI, and driving without a license and violation of the seat belt law. Holcomb said Sturgill hit a parked patrol car at an accident scene on Sweetwater-Vonore Road. When the trooper stopped him, Sturgill said he was too drunk to do any field sobriety tests. Holcomb’s report said the suspect blew a 0.23 on the intoxication meter at the Monroe County Jail.
