Construction workers at the site for the new Madisonville Primary School got a surprise Thursday morning when they discovered a deep hole while drilling wells for the heating and air system.
Evans Contracting Company Superintendent Dickey Hampton said a drill bit broke when it ran into what appeared to be a large slab of concrete. Further digging revealed what appeared to be a cavern that had settled over the years.
Hampton said the concrete may have been the front porch for a large house that once sat on the property or might have covered an old septic tank.
The crew will dig out the hole completely to stabilize it, then fill it back in. The area will not have any of the new buildings on it and will be a grass/yard area. Hampton said the discovery of cavern won’t affect the schedule of the project.
