With Sweetwater's election completed, voters in Tellico Plains and Vonore are now getting ready for their turn in the voter's booth. The Tellico Plains ballot will include all five aldermen seats, the city recorder and the mayor. Each office is for a two-year term. With two vacant positions on the board, the town will have two new aldermen.
One seat was vacated after former Alderman Wicky Shepherd moved outside the city limits. The town tried to fill the seat once, but the prospective alderman had health problems and withdrew his name. The other seat belonged to incumbent Kenneth Davis, who did not turn in a petition for an attempt at re-election.
The five people running for the five seats include incumbents Harkey Yates, Robert Hamilton and Kim Bolix. The newcomers will be Lawrence Harris and Jamie Sisson. Sisson also serves as the chief for the Tellico Plains Volunteer Fire Department, which serves the town but is a separate entity. David Bookout is the incumbent city recorder and is unchallenged for the seat. Mayor Roger Powers will have one challenger, Edna Harris.
The Tellico Election will be held on Sept. 1. The last day to register to vote in the election is Aug. 3. The early voting period will be Aug. 12-27.
Vonore Vonore is looking to elect a mayor and two aldermen. Incumbent longtime Mayor Fred "Fizz" Tallent is being challenged by newcomer Larry Summey. Incumbent Alderwoman Betty Sparks is being challenged by David Evans and John Hammontree. Incumbent Alderman Greg Green is not seeking re-election.
The Vonore election will be held on Sept. 12. The last day to register to vote is Aug. 13. The early voting period will be from Aug. 24-Sept. 7.
