The Madisonville Eagles used a big second quarter to blow open their season opener on Monday night and cruise to a 47-33 win over the Chilhowee Bobcats. Both teams had a strong opening quarter but the Eagles outscored the Bobcats 15-3 in the second quarter to take a strong grip on the game and Chilhowee could only minimize the damage from there.
The Eagles got off to a hot start, going on an 8-3 run in the game's initial 2:14 behind Shayne Wilburn's six points. The Bobcats fought back to tie the game at 10-10, but a 3-ponter by Kody Hampton and a bucket by J.J. Harmon in the final 1:07 of the quarter gave Madisonville a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. Taylor Hawkins took control of the game for Madisonville in the second quarter, scoring six of the first eight points as the Eagles opened the quarter on an 11-1 run.
Evan Torbett and Caleb Miner score back-to-back buckets to end the first half with Madisonville comfortably ahead 30-13. The Bobcats were down big at the half, but certainly not out. Chilhowee grabbed the early momentum to open the second half as it ripped off six straight points to cut the Madisonville lead down to 11 points. However, the Eagles responded with seven straight points to take its biggest lead at 18 points with 1:37 left in the third quarter.
Braden Strickland scored four points in his limited time during the quarter as Coach Steve Webb used a 10-man rotation in the game and subbed five players at a time. The Bobcats were able to shave two points off their halftime deficit, but still trailed 39-24 entering the final quarter. A furious comeback by the Bobcats went for naught, as the Eagles were able to fend off Chilhowee in the final quarter. Chilhowee outscored Madisonville 9-8 in the final frame, but the Eagles hung on for a comfortable 47-33 win.
Three Madisonville players tied for top-scoring honors as Wilburn, Torbett, and Hawkins each poured in 10 points. Hawkins had a huge night on the boards as well, finishing with 13 rebounds. The Eagles were set for a long layoff before hosting county rival Coker Creek on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m.
