A Sweetwater woman was arrested Nov. 2 after she allegedly ran her car off the road while drunk with a baby in the backseat. Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy James Wall said he was responding to a domestic disturbance call on Old Highway 68 near Sweetwater around 11:20 p.m. when he saw a blue Honda Accord pull onto the highway.
As he watched, the Honda ran out of the roadway, struck a ditch, pulled back onto the road and ran into the grass on the shoulder at which point Wall turned on his lights. The Honda ran off the road again, struck another ditch, bounced back onto the road, drove across some grass and stopped in a driveway.
Wall asked the driver, Melissa Dawn Corn, 36, Old Highway 68, to step out of the car and when she did, Wall said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol on her. There was also Corn's 3-month-old baby in the backseat of the car.
Corn said she had been involved in the domestic dispute Wall was coming to investigate and she was trying to get away from her boyfriend. Wall confirmed that Corn had never had a valid driver's license and placed her under arrest, charging her with DUI, reckless endangerment and driving without a license.
