TELLICO PLAINS-The Tellico Plains High
School Bears were undefeated heading into Saturday's game with the
Sequoyah High School Chiefs. The Chiefs needed a statement win, after
a tough loss at William Blount.
Taylor Hawkins netted 25 and Andrew
Millsaps had 19 to lead the Chiefs to a 67-56 win on the road.
The game was close early as the Chiefs
led 15 to 11 after the first quarter.
Robert Vandervort led the Bears with 15
points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Dakota Stone netted 10 points.
Ryan Bookout had nine points and Tyler Peeler added eight.
The second quarter is really when the
Chiefs build a lead. Shon Stevens hit two three-pointers and finished
with eight of his 13 points in that quarter.
The Bears did make a rally in the
third, outscoring the Chiefs 16-13 in the stanza.
Hawkins and Millsaps were just too much
in the end. The duo combined for 16 of the Chiefs' 20 points in the
final quarter.
Adding to Sequoyah's cause were
Braden Strickland, Casey Denham and Brett King. Seth Schaffer also
logged significant minutes. Denham had four points and two assists,
while Strickland added a basket and four steals. Both played well at
the point. King manned the paint and made a free throw, as did
Schaffer.
Tellico's effort was equally wide
spread. Dakota Rinehart had six points. Austyn Balcom and Devon
Collier added three a piece, while Bryan Cook had a basket and Lee
Gooch tossed in a free throw.
The night belonged to the Chiefs
though. Sequoyah head coach Daniel Curtis was pleased with the
effort.
"This is a tough place to play. Shawn [Yates] always had the guys ready to go. We just played hard, and we
have to finish at the rim more, but we played tough and we just have
to continue to fight," said Curtis.
