ATHENS - Sequoyah boys basketball coach Daniel Curtis had a premonition all week about his team heading in the District 5-AA tournament semifinal, and it came true.

“The feeling I got wasn’t very good, and it showed. We weren’t focused, we didn’t play our hardest, and we just laid an egg,” Curtis said after the second-seeded Chiefs suffered a 74-55 loss to No. 3 seed Meigs Friday at McMinn County High School in Athens.

The Tigers rode the hot hand of Bryson Baker in the first half, when the sharpshooter netted 19 of his game-high 23 points with some rather spectacular Reggie Miller impressions — namely drawing three fouls from the Chiefs while shooting from 3-point range, including a 4-point play Baker converted with 4:40 left in the first half to spark a 16-5 run to end the first half.

“Our defense was nonexistent. Our shots weren’t falling. They were making a lot of shots,” said Curtis, whose team will play Polk County at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the consolation game at McMinn County High School.

Andrew Millsaps had picked up his second foul seconds into the second quarter, forcing him to the bench. The Chiefs’ district MVP did manage 14 second-half points, twice bringing Sequoyah to within nine points. But the Chiefs could not defend Meigs in transition, giving up plenty of drives and layups.
