Lady Bears edged at Midway in District 3-A semifinal

MIDWAY - In the second semifinal game Saturday night, the Tellico Plains Lady Bears took on the Lady Green Waves of Midway. The Lady Bears were looking to win their second straight District 3-A championship, but Midway outlasted the Lady Bears in a overtime thriller, 61-58.

In the first quarter, things weren’t looking good for the Lady Bears as Midway jumped out to a 19-4 in the first quarter. The Lady Green Waves would extend their lead to 25-7 with six minutes left in the second quarter.

After a timeout, Tellico went on a 11-0 run led by Jasmine Harris, Brittany Kirkland and Valerie Cheek to cut the Midway lead to seven 25-18 with 2:36 left in the quarter. Midway took a 28-21 lead into the locker room at the half.

In the third quarter the Lady Bears kept it close throughout and head into the fourth quarter down by six 39-33.

The fourth quarter was a wild one, to say the least. Midway would extend the lead to 41-33. then the Lady Bears would go on a 7-0 run led by a  Harris two, a Bailey Hunt two and a Kirkland 3-pointer to cut the lead to just one at the 6:15 mark in the fourth.

Midway took the lead back up to 48-42 with 3:52 left in the game. After a Lady Bear timeout, Harris drew a foul shooting a 3-pointer. Harris hit 2-of-3 from the stripe, cutting Midway’s lead to 48-44.

Tellico sent the Lady Green Waves to the line, where they hit 1-of-2 for a 49-44 lead. On Tellico’s next possession Brayden Garren hit a huge 3-pointer to cut the Midway lead to only two, 49-47, with just 34.3 seconds left in the game. Tellico called an immediate timeout.

Midway was whistled for an offensive foul on the inbound play, and Tellico had one last chance at a game tying or game winning shot. Rachel Sutton hit a two-point jumper to tie the game and also drew a foul on the shot, giving Tellico a chance to win the game. Sutton came up short on the free throw, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Midway jumped out to an early 54-49 lead. Hunt hit a two to cut the lead to 54-51. Midway hit a two and went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to up the lead to 57-51 with less than a minute remaining in overtime. Kirkland hit a 3 on Tellico’s next possession to cut the Midway lead to 57-54. Midway went 4-of-4 from the stripe down the stretch and pulled out a victory in a hard-fought ball game.
