Five Monroe County inmates were arrested and charged with a hate crime after allegedly assaulting another inmate Sept. 26.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Corporal Laurie McDaniel said after she reviewed video footage of a fight from earlier in the day, she pulled an inmate out of C-Pod and took him to booking where he wrote a statement saying he had been assaulted more than once.
The inmate, who is black, said in one of those assaults, the attacking inmates showed him their swastikas, said they’re all family in there and he needed to get out.
McDaniel said she went back and looked at more video and saw inmates Justin McDaniel, Zachery Robertson, Michael Underwood and Wesley Weidner enter the reported victim’s cell and start fighting him.
She said another inmate started to get up and help the reported victim, but Justin McDaniel put out his hand and stopped him.
Laurie McDaniel said another video showed inmate John Garland Patterson Jr. also enter the reported victim’s cell and start attacking him.
Justin McDaniel, Robertson, Underwood and Weidner were charged with assault and a hate crime.
Patterson was charged with aggravated assault.
