A registered sex offender who had apparently smoked an excellent joint earlier in the day was arrested May 15 after he allegedly tried to get into cars in a hospital parking lot.
Sweetwater Police Officer James Willett said he went to the hospital parking lot on a call of what appeared to be an intoxicated man trying to get into the cars. Dispatch told him the man was named Jackie Lovingood and he had on a red scarf and was wearing dirty jeans.
Willett didn’t find him in the parking lot, but did find him walking on High Street near Sweetwater High School. Willett said Lovingood’s pants were hanging down, his speech was slurred and he was very unsteady on his feet.
Willett told him he appeared intoxicated and Lovingood said he doesn’t drink, but “I smoked a really good joint today.”
Willett placed Lovingood under arrest and Detective John Scruggs said a check showed Lovingood is a registered sex offender and had been living in a house near Engleman Park even though he had last reported he was living at 757 Wilson Station Road near Madisonville.
Lovingood, 60, was charged with public intoxication and violation of the sex offender registry.
