A Madisonville area man was arrested Dec. 20 after he allegedly abused his daughter, sending her to the hospital.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Department Det. Jason Fillyaw said Corporal Dalton Rinehart was sent to a house on Povo Road on a call of a nine month old that appeared very sick.

Rinehart said he talked to Logan Maynard and a woman, the parents, and saw that the child’s limbs and joints were stiff and could not be bent and her jaw appeared constricted, a possible sign of seizures.

The parents told Rinehart the girl had fallen two days earlier and hit her head on a small toy bus, but appeared fine afterward.

The father told Rinehart his daughter was fine until the evening and hadn’t been crying.

Fillyaw said the girl was taken to children’s hospital where she was put in intensive care. The staff there informed Fillyaw the girl had several hemorrhages in her brain and retinal hemorrhages in her eyes. Both are signs of having been shaken hard.

Fillyaw said he went back and talked to the parents and Maynard admitted he’d shaken the child when he lost his temper while the mother and a friend were at the store.

Maynard, 20, Povo Road, Madisonville, was charged with aggravated child abuse.
