Alleged reckless driver killed in single-vehicle crash

This Sweetwater Police Department shows the badly damaged vehicle after an accident that killed a Knoxville man near the old TMG/TMI campus on Tuesday.

A man was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Sweetwater last Tuesday afternoon.

Just after 3 p.m. on June 11, Monroe County dispatchers received a call about a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix sedan driving reckless driving. According to the accident report from Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Ernest Martin, the vehicle was traveling south on Highway 11, which turns into N. Main Street, in Sweetwater when it left the roadway and hit a concrete driveway, going airborne and catching on fire. The accident was not far from the former TMG/TMI campus.

The driver, Joseph M. Moses, 65, of Knoxville, died in the crash.

Trooper Martin said Moses was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, and was not wearing a seat belt.

While officers did not expect drugs to also be a factor, standard drug tests were administered as is normal procedure in fatal accidents.

Sweetwater Police said some men mowing in the area rushed to help Moses.
