A sandwich on a blanket led to an alleged machete attack Dec. 2.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Miller said he was sent to Old Mill Road on an assault call and found Owen Martin lying face down in the front yard. Martin told Miller he’d attacked his cousin by hitting him on the arm.
Miller said he went into the house and found the cousin with his arm wrapped in a towel. The cousin told Miller he and Martin were watching television and playing Xbox when Martin sat his sandwich down on his late grandfather’s blanket. The alleged victim said he asked Martin to move the sandwich, but he didn’t.
Martin said he left the bedroom and returned a few minutes later to find his sandwich was in the trash. Martin said he became angry and took a machete from under the TV and started attacking the victim.
The victim said he took off through the house with Martin chasing him and, at one point, he grabbed an ironing board and Martin allegedly struck the board, causing the machete to break into pieces.
Miller said he did see blood throughout the house on the floor and walls. Martin told Miller he walked down the road, throwing the broken machete into the woods or a ditch, but he couldn’t remember where.
Miller said the victim was taken to Sweetwater Hospital to have his injuries checked, while Martin, 22, was taken to jail and charged with especially aggravated assault.
