James R. (Dick) Griffith, age 84, of Madisonville, passed away at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at Wood Presbyterian Home. He graduated from Madisonville High School and Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens.
Dick was in the Tennessee Air National Guard for six years, as well as supervisor of transportation for the Monroe County Board of Education for many years. He was a black angus cattle farmer and received many awards from the University of Tennessee’s Department of Agriculture.
He was a member of Hopewell Springs Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Johnny Griffith and Sina Mae Saffles Griffith Rhea; his brother, Frank Griffith; his aunts and uncles on his mother’s side, Mildred Saffles, Roxie and Bill Harrill, Harless and Georgia Saffles, Doc and Polly Saffles, Dan and Vivian Saffles, Willie and Kenneth Kirksey, and Emaline and R.V. Nation; his aunts and uncles on his father’s side, Richard Griffith, Mayme and John Fitzgerald, Elisha and Sylvia Griffith, Byrdie and Henry Wynn, Bill and Jenny Griffith, Albert and Margaret Griffith, Bonnie S. and Willie Mae Griffith, Harry and Thelma Griffith, Joe Hudon and Gertrude Griffith.
Survivors include: a host of cousins;
Special friend, Nelda Breeden;
Best buddy, Charles Burke.

A graveside service and interment was held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, at Hopewell Springs Cemetery with Rev. Mike Williams officiating. Military honors were provided by V.F.W. Goldstar Post 5156, D.A.V. Chapter 93 and American Legion Post 106.
