James Calvin Spurling went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 2, 2021, at the age of 74. He was surrounded by his wife, daughters, and grandchildren when his heart beat for the last time.
Calvin was born on March 1, 1947, in Monroe County, Tennessee, where he lived most of his life. He retired from a life of trucking in 1996. He attended Covenant Baptist Church in Etowah.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Leonard and Zula Spurling; his brother, Raymond Spurling; and his mother-in-law, Nellie Lonas, and father-in-law, Paul Lonas.
He is survived by: his wife of 54 years, Wilma Spurling;
His daughters and son-in-laws, Lisa and Tony Crowder, of Sweetwater, Karen and Gary Entz, of Maryville, and Crystal and Darrin Miller, of Niota;
Grandchildren, Dustin Crowder and wife Tamaryn, Jessica Crowder, Ashley Yarbrough, Trey Mingee, Shane Miller and Emily Miller;
Great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Titus Crowder;
Brothers and sister-in-laws, Tony and Wanda Spurling, Steve and Ann Spurling, ML Spurling, and Paul and Tammie Spurling;
Sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Paul Williams.
The family will receive friends at Companion Funeral Home of Athens on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, from noon until 2 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. and will be officiated by Rev. Randy Boggess. Burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery in Madisonville with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
