When the TSSAA Board of Control met on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Siegel High School in Murfreesboro, they finalized the classifications for the 2021-23 cycle as well as other matters.
Among the 42 requests heard by the board, 10 were approved — leaving 32 denied.
Tellico Plains’ request to move from Region 3-2A to Region 2-2A was denied. The Bears’ current region features Bledsoe County, Marion County, Meigs County, Polk County and Tyner Academy.
A move to Region 2-2A would have joined them with the York Institute, Monterey, Oneida, Rockwood and Wartburg Central. Meigs County also requested to move to Region 2-2A, but was denied.
Sweetwater’s Region 3-3A will move to six total teams, however, as Kingston’s request to move from Region 2-3A was approved. The region now features Brainerd, Kingston, Loudon, McMinn Central, Signal Mountain and Sweetwater. Kingston leaves behind Alcoa, Austin-East, Gatlinburg-Pittman, Northview Academy, Pigeon Forge and Union County.
Kingston (7-4) finished third in Region 2-3A along with a 56-0 second round exit at the hands of Alcoa. The Yellow Jackets have reached the playoffs in the past four consecutive seasons and finished with a winning record three times in the last five years. Red Bank submitted a request to realign the softball, baseball and basketball district in the Knoxville and Chattanooga areas, but the request was denied.
Smith County, a potential playoff opponent for Sweetwater in football, saw their request to move to to Region 5-3A from Region 4-3A denied. The TSSAA voted to approve a measure that cut down qualifying for the cross country state championship meet to the top three teams and top five runners not aligned with a team.
Worth noting, under these regulations, Sweetwater’s Keke Norfolk, the only individual Monroe County runner, would have still qualified for the state meet.
Tellico Plains qualified as a team. The board approved a Sullivan South proposal that all region basketball tournament games, eight in total, will be played at the higher seed’s location during the 2020-21 year due to COVID-19 precautions. The board added this notion to the district games as well.
