Eight local players have been named to the District 5-AA All-District boys and girls teams. Sequoyah and Sweetwater share four athletes each on the teams, with the Chiefs having three students make the boys squad.

Senior Jackson Kuberka and juniors Dillon Stakely and Cooper Strickland have been named to the team for Sequoyah. The Chiefs (14-8, 7-3 District 5-AA) are the tournament’s second seed and have qualified for the Region 3-AA tournament.

Austin Long and Gabe Leeper, a senior and sophomore respectively, have been named to the team for Sweetwater. Long is the reigning District Tournament MVP from last season, won by Sweetwater. The Wildcats clinched a third place finish with a win over Sequoyah on Monday, Feb. 8 — they will host the to be determined six seed in the opening round of the district tournament.

On the girls side, Abbey Barr, a senior, and Trinity Upton, a junior, have been named to the girls All-District team for Sweetwater. Barr will play at Tennessee Wesleyan University in the fall.

Abbey Borden, a senior, has been named to the squad for Sequoyah. Borden is the Lady Chiefs’ leading scorer.

Sweetwater, the fourth seed, and Sequoyah, the fifth seed, will meet in the opening round of the District 5-AA tournament. The winner will advance to the semifinal and clinch a spot in the Region 3-AA tournament.
